Closing the Engagement Gap

How Great Companies Unlock Employee Potential for Superior Results

Portfolio/Penguin Putnam, May 2008

In 2005, the consulting firm of Towers Perrin—a $1.5 billion organization that specializes in HR services—conducted a proprietary survey of 86,000 employees around the world. The study revealed a dangerously sad state of employee engagement. Overall, fully 25% of workers worldwide are genuinely disengaged, while only 14% are highly engaged. This leaves 62% of employees who are moderately engaged, at best. The authors call this group the “passive, massive middle,” and believe these workers hold the key to improving engagement levels.

To that end, Towers Perrin’s survey also identifies the top ten drivers of engagement—the primary factors that inspire employees to do their best work. CLOSING THE ENGAGEMENT GAP presents a program any executive or manager can use to encourage workers to go the extra mile, every day. And as full engagement has been shown to affect the bottom line, companies around the world are realizing they simply cannot afford to have a dissatisfied, or disengaged, workforce.
